Hi everyone.  It’s been a very hectic week and I have fallen down on my updates.  However I am very happy to report that I haven’t fallen down on my 30 day commitment to staying off of sugar filled drinks.

I’ve finished two weeks now without a single sip of those tempting, tasty beverages.

I am on the downhill run now.  Thanks to all of you again for your continued support.

I’m starting to think about what my next change will be and am going to invite anyone along that cares to join me.  I will keep you posted on what I am thinking.

Day 8 Results

Good news!  Eight days in and I’m still sugar free.  Today was just coffee and water to drink.

Going to keep this one short and sweet tonight.  Sleep well everyone.

This cold has been dragging on for almost a week now.  It needs to go.  I’m alternating between not being able to breath from congestion and not being able to breath from coughing.  Although the coughing is accompanied by a <sarcasm>lovely sense of dizziness and display of black spots </sarcasm>.  Seriously though, I’m ready to be back to normal.

Today was a loooong day.  Two marathon planning sessions for the work we’re doing in the next three week sprint* for the project we’re working on wore me out.  Not to mention all the marker dust from writing on whiteboards for four hours.  Yuck!

Happily, I was able to resist the urge for a soda the entire time.  Heinous amounts of coffee were consumed but no soda.  So another successful day in the books.

I’m ready for bed folks.  Have a good night.  I will talk to you tomorrow.

Whew!  The first six days down, twenty-four to go.  Made it through another day with no soda, only coffee, water and iced tea without sugar.

On top of that I mowed the grass in the front yard.  Under my own power.  No gas powered mower for me.  I used my reel mower.  Gah!

I’ve really got to get the riding mower fixed.

I’m one fifth of the way through this challenge.  I’m a long way from done but I’m feeling good about the odds of seeing this through.

I’ll keep the posts coming.

Whooops!

I missed sending out my update last night.  Good news though.  I managed to stay on track and day five is in the books with no soda or other sugar filled drinks consumed.

That’s one sixth of my challenge completed successfully.  Thanks again to you all for being my motivation.

I got a full night’s sleep last night and more.  Hopefully that means I won’t fall asleep early and miss another update.

Day six is underway!

Day Four Results

It’s getting late so I will keep the update brief.  I made it through the day without a soda or sweet tea.  Stuck to my new go tos of coffee and water.

I am hoping to complete a five day streak tomorrow.  I am also hoping the cold starts to give way.  Three days of fever, cough and congestion are getting old.

Good night everyone.  I’m off to bed.

reel-mowerToday was easier than the previous two days to avoid sugar filled drinks.  I didn’t have the afternoon craving today that I’d had Friday and Saturday.  That may be the result of all the water I drank today while doing yard work.  My riding lawn mower is temporarily out of commission so I’ve had to resort to using my Reel Mower and actual brute force labor.

I only managed to get about half of the front yard cut but I did drink about twelve glasses of water to stay hydrated.

On top of that, I stepped on the scale for my weekly weigh in and I learned I had dropped a little over a pound this week.  On the weight loss front that’s a step in the right direction.  I’ve got a good way to go but at least I didn’t lose any ground this week.

This is the third day in a row that I’ve managed to stick to water and coffee only to drink.  The support continues to roll in and I feel it’s making a huge difference in being able to maintain my self control.  At least for me I feel far more accountable to stay on track.

I had hoped to be able to report feeling a positive difference today but my lovely wife and I have both managed to catch summer colds.  The stuffiness and coughing have overshadowed any positive improvements I would be feeling by now.  Not to mention the lack of sleep.

Blah!

Hopefully I’m turning the corner on that and should be feeling back to normal and better than normal in a day or two.  In the mean time I’ll just stay focused on my goal and know the persistence will pay off.

For tonight though I’m going to take two aspirin and see you in the morning.

So day two is in the books and I am happy to report I made it through without caving in.  Only water and coffee to drink today.  There was one point this afternoon where I heard the Dr. Pepper calling my name but I stood strong.

I think the challenge I’ve had in the past was simply not paying enough attention to what I was drinking.  Now that I’m focused on making healthier choices I’m actually making a choice about what I’m drinking instead of just flying on auto-pilot.

A 20oz soda, my typical serving, has ~16 teaspoons of sugar.  When I imagine eating that much sugar in a single sitting it makes me nauseous thinking about it.  But that’s what I’m consuming every time I drink a bottle of soda.  Each bottle comes in at 240 calories so this habit is really killing me in the weight department too.  I’m hoping the deficit I’m creating by not drinking sugar filled drinks will help jump start some weight loss.

If you’re drinking a lot of soda or sugar filled drinks each day and need some encouragement let me know in the comments.  I’ll be right there with you.  I know it’s hard to quit.  I’m feeling that challenge right now.  You aren’t alone.  Let your supporters know you need some encouragement and if they’re like mine they will back you 110%.

So, today I started a quest for a healthier me.  I am going cold turkey off of sugar filled drinks.  I enlisted the help of my Facebook friends and family to call me out if I don’t post my daily resukts by 8:00 pm each day for the next thirty days.

The thought is I need some support and accountability to acheive the goal I am trying to reach.  Who better to help with that than my friends and family?

This is a test run of sorts.  If it’s a success I have other things I want to try it with.  But for now…  baby steps.

Thanks to everyone in advance for following along and helping out.  I hope I can return the favor some day.

Oh! I almost forgot! How did I do? I am happy to report that I only had black coffee and water to drink today. Success!

Onward to a healthier life.
